During the first six months of 2020, a record 1.13 trillion won, or about $950 million, of instant noodles were sold in South Korea.The data comes from a report from Nielsen Korea and instant noodle company Nongshim.

The report said that sales increased by 7.2% compared to the same time in 2019, a record amount of sales for a 6-month period.In May, an official from Nongshim told United Press International that the pandemic has made people stay home and buy more instant noodles.

The official said that people from outside of South Korea have also been buying more Nongshim noodles.According to Nikkei Asian Review, instant noodle companies in other countries have been doing well, too. Tingyi Holding, which owns Master Kong noodles in China, had an almost 60% increase in net profits in the first half of 2020.Japan’s Nissin Foods Holdings, owner of Cup Noodle, saw its net profits more than double in April-to-June compared to the same months in 2019.

Another Japanese noodle company, Toyo Suisan, saw its profits increase by 76% in the same period.Even in the UK, Nielsen found that the sales of noodles increased by 48% in the first week of April compared to the last year.It’s not just instant noodles that have increased in sales during the pandemic.

An April report from the American Frozen Food Institute found that 70% of people said they had bought more frozen foods during the pandemic. And in the UK, Neilsen found that sales of things like pasta, pastry and baking goods also increased in April.
