Young Americans Increasingly Avoiding Alcohol

According to scientists at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, Americans between the ages of 18 and 22 are drinking less alcohol than they were almost 20 years ago.

Led by Sean Esteban McCabe, director of the Center for the Study of Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking and Health, the research team looked at 182,722 young people and compared the drinking habits of those who were in university with those who were not.

Their study, comparing data from 2002 and 2018, found the number of university students who abstained from alcohol increased from 20% in 2002 to 28% in 2018. Among those who did not attend university the numbers increased from about 24% to about 30%.

The percentage of people aged 18 to 22 who abused alcohol also dropped by about half for both groups. It went from about 18% to about 9% for university students, and about 15% to about 6% for non-university students.

While much of the world allows those 18 or 19 years and older to drink alcohol, the legal age in the United States is 21. The CDC reports that in 2018, 19% of Americans aged from 12 to 20 drank alcohol.

The study did not have clear answers as to why fewer young people are drinking, but the authors suggest that it could be because more young adults in the US are living with their parents than they were at the beginning of the study. As of 2020, 52% of Americans between the ages of 19-29 live at home. In 2000, that number was only 38%.

The authors also suggest that prevention and intervention work focused on US college students may have helped reduce the number of drinkers.

In recent years, events like Dry January and social groups that encourage people to drink less have become more popular. By offering a less serious alternative to addiction support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, it’s possible that these groups have also helped young people to drink less.
